A Lord gets a sickness, a Wandsman finds the secret to Alagadda.
His Dark Materials AU of Alagadda and stuff + my own version of events. Knowledge of His Dark Materials isn't required to read and understand this, though I would recommend at least looking at the page for daemons on Wikipedia or something to understand what they are.
